AI Adoption Challenges and How to Navigate Them

Leaders everywhere are being asked to adopt AI, with goals of efficiency, productivity, insight and competitive advantage. According to PwC’s 2023 Emerging Technology Survey, 73% of US companies are already using AI. But some have their reservations about adopting the technology, and others simply don’t know where to start with it.

There are some clear challenges in adopting AI in a business environment, and solutions are only now beginning to emerge.

AI adoption challenges

"Like any technology, AI alone cannot deliver meaningful transformation. Leaders know that real change will only occur if the environment supports it. The problem is that today there is just as much fear and uncertainty around AI as there is excitement," says Bizagi CEO, Gustavo Gomez.

"It would be naïve to suggest that none of that fear is well-founded. There are security measures that must be addressed, and the simple fact is that jobs will be lost to AI. But other jobs will grow, and AI will help people to get more done and do less mundane work. Erik Brynjolfsson looked at an AI-powered call centre and found out that average productivity improved by 14% very quickly, and productivity went up by 34% for the newest and the least-skilled workers."

Some of the challenges facing AI adoption in business include:

Skills and knowledge gaps

Businesses often face a shortage of the expertise needed to develop, implement and maintain AI technologies effectively. To bridge these gaps, organizations need to focus on upskilling their teams and invest in training programs that provide them with the skills required to leverage these technologies successfully.

Identifying feasible use cases

Pinpointing practical and impactful AI use cases requires thorough analysis of business processes to identify opportunities where AI technology can enhance operations. Engaging stakeholders across departments helps ensure that AI initiatives align with organizational goals and deliver measurable value.

Implementation cost

Implementing AI involves significant outlays. There’s the initial investment in hardware and software, data collection and cleaning and training costs, plus once implemented there are maintenance costs that need to be considered. Incorporating AI into areas where it can quickly deliver value supports the thinking that it warrants the initial costs.

Incorporating into existing initiatives

Integrating AI into existing business initiatives has the potential to disrupt current processes and workflows if teams fail to ensure compatibility with legacy systems and existing technologies. Businesses can mitigate this by assessing compatibility and developing comprehensive integration strategies.

Data access and quality

The inability to access necessary data and poor data quality can lead to gaps that impact the accuracy of the outcomes. Therefore, it is vital that AI tools have access to comprehensive, accurate, and relevant datasets that are well maintained for optimum performance and reliability.

Data security and privacy

AI has access to a vast amount of data and therefore requires robust security measures to make sure it is managed correctly and protected from breaches. Businesses must secure data using encryption and access controls, and ensure that data handling practices comply with data privacy requirements.

Resistance to change

AI does pose a threat to some jobs and therefore it is likely to be met with some resistance by employees who fear they could be replaced. To address these concerns, business leaders need to communicate that AI is intended to enhance the employee experience rather than replace the human workforce and involve them in its implementation.
